The campaign “Do something!” – Promoting civil courage
“What's it to me?” “What can I do?” “Aren't there enough other people, who are responsible?” These are
the typical excuses raised by those who witness a crime without doing something about it.
Looking out instead of looking away, getting involved instead of standing aside. With the information
campaign “Tu was!” (= “Do something!”), the German police have initiated a programme to awaken solidarity in the
populace and to promote greater readiness to help.
Many of us feel troubled and would like to help when we see other people being molested, robbed or threatened.
But we often fail to do something, in the first place, because we don't know what we can do, and, in the second place,
because we are afraid of unpleasant consequences for ourselves.
For this reason, the police in Germany have put together extensive materials designed to help all citizens to get
involved in dangerous situations either as helpers or as witnesses. Printed materials can be obtained at any police station.
