Combat sports: Preventing violence and avoiding aggression

A judo club in Weingarten in South Germany had been sponsoring anti-aggression seminars for delinquent adolescents. The positive experiences with these training-sessions gave the club the idea of bringing their prevention activities into the schools. Today, the judo club works with some fourteen schools, conducting work groups, programs for youth workers, block instruction and martial art seminars.

The aim is to prevent violence in the schools and to promote team-mindedness among the students. Furthermore, there are special seminars for victims of mobbing, the emphasis here being on strengthening self-confidence. In all these activities, cooperation with social workers, classroom teachers, and athletics coaches is very important.
