BASF AG (Chemical Industry)

Six basic values have been formulated and are part of the management agreements: safety, health, environmental protection, mutual respect, open dialogue and integrity.

• With its diversity programme, BASF attempts to increase the role of women and foreign workers in management.

• Company children's care centres make it easier to reconcile parenthood and occupation.

• Special measures are taken to insure the safety and health of the working force.

• Effort is made to maintain good relations to neighbours, e.g. information through neighbourhood forums, cooperation with local institutions and associations.

Concrete environmental goals are set, e.g. emissions reduction (10% in the atmosphere and 40% in water by 2012) and already have been partially achieved.

Education is a strongpoint of the firm's social engagement: expressed in the promotion of language competency among small children, sponsorship of schools in the region and a special project to interest children in scientific subjects.

Humanitarian engagement finds expression in the donation of mosquito nets for the prevention of malaria and the donation of vitamins for the undernourished.

The CSR-Programme of the BASF brings advantages for all the stakeholders and for the corporation itself: it pursues environmental protection, wins the confidence of staff and neighbours, and earns public sympathy, all of which means good advertising.
