In search of global ethical standards

In the middle of the 1990's, the InterAction Council (IAC), composed of former heads of state and of government under the direction of Helmut Schmidt has been studying the question of intercultural and inter-religious values. For a meeting of experts, Schmidt sought out outstanding representatives of the major world Religions.

The expert meeting took place in March 1996 in Vienna under the motto “In search of global ethical standards”. Hans Küng served as scientific advisor.

In its closing report, the InterAction Council, calling attention to the Global Ethic Declaration of Chicago, laid down the principle that “To solve the global problems we must start with a common ethical basis.”
