Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain

• The reform programs of Mikhail Gorbachev, glasnost (opening up) and perestroika (reconstruction), had the effect in 1988 of opening up the East European countries.

• In November 1989, in the wake of a peaceful revolution in the German Democratic Republic, the Berlin Wall – a symbol of state terrorism and inhumanity – fell.
• In 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved, thus putting an end to the East-West division of the world.

• The East European countries moved toward democracy and integration into the European Union.

• However, in some regions of the former Soviet influence sphere, bloody processes of dissolution broke out, e.g. the Yugoslavian Wars beginning in 1991.
