Richelieu breaks a treaty
With the Edict of Nantes, 1598, the French King Henry IV (the father of Louis XIII) had entered into
a treaty with the French Protestants (Huguenots), guaranteeing them political and military autonomy in some 200 places with Huguenot majorities.
Concerned about the unity of the nation and with it religious (Catholic) unity, Cardinal Richelieu broke this treaty in 1628/9. He waged war against the Huguenots and, after his victory, withdrew all their privileges.
