Dharma – The all-encompassing moral order

In the Classical Era

• The notion of dharma develops in an ethical direction.
• It comes to mean the whole complex of duties binding the individual on the basis of his status (varna) and his stage of life (ashrama).
• It grounds the social order as a part of the all-encompassing cosmic order.

In the Vedas

• Meaning “support” dharma is the basis for order and lawfulness (in the cosmos as well as in society).
• It is a substantially understood guarantee of cosmic order and the foundation of rules of behaviour.
