The Qur’an

The Qur’an
(arab. al-qur’an,
“the recitation”)

• Is believed to be, in its original Arabic text, the literal word of God that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
• Is regarded as God’s final revelation, replacing the Bible of the Jews and Christians, which is also regarded as divine revelation though later corrupted.
Koran

• Only after Muhammad’s death under the third Caliph Utman (644–56) was it compiled from the oral and written memories of his followers.
• Consists of 114 chapters (Surahs) divided into more than 6.000 verses (ayat), but is viewed by Muslims as one single, continuous revelation.
