I am the Lord your God,
1. you shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
3. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God.
4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
5. Honour your father and your mother.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s house;
you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female
slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your
neighbour. (Exodus 20:2–17)
NOTE:
In the different religions and confessional traditions, the division and numbering of the commandments differs. The version given here is the rabbinic one, which corresponds closely to that used by many Protestants. By contrast, Catholics and Lutherans combine the 1st and 2nd Commandments of this version into one single 1st Commandment, so that the numbering of the subsequent commandments is advanced by one, i.e. the 3rd Commandment in this version is the 2nd in the Catholic and Lutheran version, etc. To achieve the number ten, that version ends by dividing the last commandment into two, to give a 10th Commandment, beginning with “You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife ...”.
