The InterAction Council was called into being in 1983 as a worldwide forum of former heads of state and government.
The council develops analyses and proposals for action in dealing with current problems in politics, in the economy, and in society. Through it, the experience, the influence, and the international contacts of elder statesmen are harnessed for the improvement of international cooperation in the fields of “peace and security”, “the world economy”, “development and environmental protection”.
The UN manifesto “Crossing the Divide”
In connection with the “United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilizations”, 2001, UN General Secretary Kofi Annan called together a Group of Eminent Persons from the realms of politics, culture and the sciences, among them Hans Küng.
The Group drew up a programmatic manifesto for the peaceful development of international relations in the 21st Century.
In November 2001, this paper was laid before the UN General Assembly and was published under the title “Crossing the Divide – Dialogue among Civilizations”.
